The Herbal Bed

By Peter Whelan

Start 7.30pm Tickets £4.50 £4 cons.

The Herbal Bed ,is  an emotional thriller by Peter Whelan, whose previous plays include The Accrington Pals, The Bright and Bold Design and Divine Right.

This is the story of a young married woman of some standing, who has been publicly accused of having a sexual liaison with a married neighbor. The only way the young woman can clear her name, is for her to sue her accuser for slander.

Sound familiar?

But the events portrayed in this play happened almost 400 years ago. The young woman was Suzanna the eldest daughter of William Shakespeare and the wife of the respected physician, John Hall of Stratford Upon Avon. The case for slander was heard in the Bishop's Court at Worcester Cathedral where despite the recanting of the accuser, the outcome proved to be far from certain.

Treebeard & Haze

A rock and folk double bill

 Start 8pm

Tickets £10

Treebeard are a new band formed by Haze & World Turtle brothers Chris & Paul McMahon plus Paul Chisnell (Haze, Three Legged Cat, Old Pekuliar), Gordon Walker (Ant Hill Mob & guest on World Turtle's 'Wilderness of Eden') and Chris Jellis (Old Pekuliar).
The band play World Turtle & Haze originals as well as a selection of rock, pop, folk (& even country!) songs in their own inimitable way.
Originally called Acoustic Haze, the band changed their name to Treebeard, after the character in Lord of the Rings, to avoid confusion with Haze.
The band describe their style as 'Heavy Wood', a concept stolen from the Nottingham 80's duo Twice Bitten, who supported Haze as well as many of the other progressive rock bands, playing their own distinct style of electric/acoustic music.
Treebeard have just released their debut CD 'Heavy Wood' on Gabadon Records.

A Guardian review of a recent gig with Renato D¹Aiello  (24.4..03) described Kirk as managing Œto combine the bluesy exuberance of a barrelhouse pianist with the elegance of a Chopin recitalist. His outlandish style sounded almost Cuban at timesй . Dave Wickins is described as Œplaying in tight unison with Lightsey Šhe maintained a continuum of hard-swinging sounds that ranged from the ethnic and ethereal  to the positively volcanic
