Colvin Quarmby

Start 7.30pm Tickets £10

Colvin Quarmby play, according to their publicity, "refreshingly different acoustic music". This is true but is not the whole of the story. When you attend a CQ concert you will hear this distinctive four piece band play a potent mix of driving acoustic rhythm laced with liberal helpings of folk, country, and skiffle, within an intelligent use of the pop sensibility, topped off with some absolutely irresistible harmonies. Quite simply, CQ will leave you well and truly Tangoed!! Gerry Colvin himself is chirpier than a bucketful of Trill at times he is almost Lee Evans with a guitar  and his distinctive vocal style matches his persona perfectly. And as for the songs there are more hooks than you would find at a fishing contest; listen to one chorus and it is impossible not to find yourself singing along to the next. On top of that you' 11 grab an earful of some of the most original and refreshing words you will have heard for quite some time. Treat yourself; see Colvin Quarmby in concert!

Relatively Speaking

By Alan Ayckbourn

On stage 7.30pm  Tickets £4.50: concessions £4

Party rate 10% for 16 or more tickets

We are delighted to be reviving this 1967 comedy by the country's most prolific

playwright . it was his first big success and remains, arguably, his funniest play.

Ayckbourn himself has said: "I wrote this play originally as a result of a phone call

firm the late Stephen Joseph . . . He asked me then simply for a play which would

make people laugh when their seaside holidays were spoiled by the rain

and they came into the theatre to get dry before trudging back to their landladies.

This seemed as worthwhile a reason for writing a play as any, so I tried to comply.

Greg and Ginny are living together, but Greg is becoming somewhat suspicious that he is not the only man in her life. Little things like telephone calls that are cut off the moment he answers, a drawer full of boxes of chocolates, a pair of slippers that are certainly neither his nor hers. He wonders about Ginny’s plan to visit her parents’ and decides to follow her. In actual fact he has sound grounds for his suspicions. Ginny is really going to see a considerably older lover, Philip, but only in order to break with him and retrieve some letters. Chance (or ironical fate) sees to it that Greg, on arrival, mistakes Philip and his wife, Sheila, for Ginny’s parents and further confusion arises when Philip is misled into thinking that Greg is Sheila’s lover and wants to marry her. Ginny’s arrival further confounds an already wildly hilarious situation ‑ a series of misunderstandings in which slippers again have a part to play

Our Day Out

Start 7.30pm Tickets

Our Day Out" is a 20th century drama play.  It is written by Willie Russell and follows Mrs Kay's Progress class, unleashed for the day on a school outing.

Set in Liverpool and Wales the general plot is how a teacher, Mr Briggs', attitude towards the pupils changes. It is about his conversations with Mrs Kay, as both frequently disagree with each other and always believe they speak for the great majority.

However, Our Day Out is more than just a romp. It points to the depressing reality for some young people, for whom one day out is as much as they can expect.

The Elvis Presley – That’s The Way It Was show aims to tell the audience the full Elvis Presley story through his numerous chart successes.  The first half is taken up with the early years commencing in 1955 whilst the second half concentrates on the “come-back” era and “Vegas” years.  The show is approximately 2 hours long.

 RENATO D’AIELLO QUARTET

With Kirk Lightsey (piano), Nicola Muresu (bass)

and Dave Wickins (drums)

On stage 8pm Tickets £9 concs, £7

Returning once again to the Bonington, superlative saxophonist Renato D’Aiello fronts an all-star quartet featuring American pianist Kirk Lightsey. Born in 1937, Lightsey describes himself as a Detroit pianist incorporating “a Bud Powell awareness, an Art Tatum styling, a bebop feel and a pianistic approach.” Important early professional work was as an accompanist to a range of singers including Ernestine Anderson and Lovelace Watkins. He recorded his first instrumental album with Sonny Stitt and went on to make five albums with Chet Baker and to work for four years with Dexter Gordon. Having moved to Paris in 1993, he now tours Europe extensively. His group The Leaders — with Arthur Blythe, Chico Freeman and Lester Bowie — has performed extensively at the major European Jazz Festivals.

Renato’s fellow countryman Nicola Muresu is certainly one of the most reliable bassists on today’s Jazz scene. His solid walking bass and poetic solos are greatly appreciated in England where he is playing regularly with Renato’s outfits. He is member of Steve Grossman’s European Quartet and he has been playing alongside such luminaries as Johnny Griffin, Lee Konitz, Art Farmer, Benny Golson, David Liebman, Jerry Bergonzi and Steve Lacy.

David Hughes

On stage 8pm Tickets

"from NETRHYTHMS January 2003

David Hughes grins like a particularly capricious imp. His face creases & his eyes sparkle with the knowledge that he has the audience at Colchester’s intimate AcoustiCity club exactly where he wants them.  They’ve been softened up by his stunning acoustic guitar technique - tumbling arpeggios; rock solid, machine gun right hand picking - & his self-deprecating humour. The bespectacled, pinstripe suit clad Hughes now sits back in his chair & prepares to unleash a string of songs based around the Essex/Suffolk area from which almost all of the audience are drawn. His laconic introduction to Blue Car describes how all singer-songwriters are issued with a cause when they collect their guitar, “Sting got the rainforest.....I got rural transport”. The audience are hooked, roaring with laughter. By the time Hughes moves to his battle of the sexes tango parody Hold your Horses Woman or the small town murder story Heart of Stone (“Management under new shop”) they are completely captivated. Amongst the humour there are love songs, philosophical analysis of the attraction of a run down house just 50 yards from morning papers & the guitar shop and explorations of surreal dreams. This is the curiosity that is David Hughes - simultaneously sardonic, witty & musically complex with an ability to manipulate & hold an audience transfixed with just voice & guitar, communicating on some primal level borne of years of playing solo. Post show sales of the career retrospective CD Recognised are brisk then the audience, most of whom had never previously heard of David Hughes, disappear excitedly into the night to spread the word that real, organic music still exists in a world of plastic Kylies & boy bands.

Jazzsteps presents

Sheila Jordon

On Stage 8pm  Tickets £12 concs,£10

With Brian Kellock

One of the most consistently creative of all jazz singers, Sheila Jordan has a relatively small voice but is one of the few vocalists who can improvise logical lyrics (which often rhyme!) She is a superb scat singer and is also an emotional interpreter of ballads. Yet despite her talents, Sheila spent much of the 1960s and 1970s working in a conventional day job! She studied piano when she was 11 and sang in a vocal group. She moved to New York in the 1950s, was married to Duke Jordan (1952-62), studied with Lennie Tristano and worked in New York clubs. Sheila was initially inspired by the music of Charlie Parker, her — “musical guru.” She honed her skills, sitting in with Parker and other musicians when they came to town to perform in the Bluebird, the Sudan and other local clubs. Moving to New York City in the early ‘50s, she sang in Greenwich Village clubs and at jam sessions with some of the city’s jazz giants, including Charles Mingus and Herbie Nichols and studied with legendary pianist Lennie Tristano.

Brian Kellock is a piano player of the finest pedigree. He has worked with many leading international jazz musicians including Art Farmer, Scott Hamilton and Herb Geller. James Morrison has described him as “one of those rare players who manages to combine startling originality and an almost mischievous inventiveness, with the kind of down to earth swing that is the reason most of us love jazz.”

Arrivals Departures

Start 7.30pm Tickets £5 Cons. £4

Two one act plays

This is theatre at its best    Speakeasy Theatre Leicester

These two devised pieces written and performed by the graduating students are a dramatic contrast to each other.

"Arrivals" is set around an audition and gave the performers an opportunity to use a wide range of characters. Their physicality in this piece is fuelled with high energy making "Arrivals" a superb piece of entertainment. There were some wonderfully comedic moments and well observed performances.

But, for me, the second piece "Departures"is  a triumph. The script is strong and storyline clear and riveting. Within this piece all the performers come into their own. It is clear that all the students rise to the challenge that such an intense piece about the discovery of one's own death requires. The high emotion is dealt with and paced beautifully, and just when, as an audience member you felt there is nowhere for all the high drama to go, the actors show courage by using poignant and contained moments to draw the audience back in.

Mick Thomas

Mick Thomas is well known in his native Australia as a musician and songwriter.  He cut his musical teeth with a folk oriented Melbourne rock band called Weddings Parties Anything that played together from 1984 until the end of the 1990s, by which time they had built up an enormous reputation in the southern hemisphere and a cult following in the rest of the world.

When you listen to Mick Thomas you'll hear literate songs, arranged well, with catchy tunes that worm their way into your unconscious. He is an accomplished songwriter and a thoughtful and perfectionist composer. Most of the songs are neither profound nor philosophical and there is little trace of any real social or political comment. They tend to be about people and places and often they present vignettes of Australian life, evoking either what were presumably his personal experiences or episodes from the past, which captured his attention.  Whatever the subject the songs are always lyrically and musically crafted to perfection and performed with a touch of genius.

Mick Thomas, solo, in concert, presents an artist at the peak of his powers. He is in the UK for two weeks only and a3k is proud to present him at the Bonington Theatre.

Anni Kurmis in ‘Talking Heads’ by Alan Bennett

‘Her Big Chance’ and ‘Bed Among the Lentils’

On stage 7.30pm   Tickets: £7 and £5 concessions

“Anni Kurmis takes on her roles with verve and veracity.” (Leeds Guide)

Following the sell-out success of her regional tour, Anni Kurmis performs two characters as different as chalk and cheese in a unique evening of theatre.  Lesley is a striving actress whose ‘big chance’ casts her as a pawn in a porn game and Susan, a vicar’s wife who only glimpses God in the Communion wine.

“Kurmis’ characterisation is astute and totally believable, down to the last blink or wince, her straddled sexily stockinged legs as Lesley or her frumpish old frocks and awkward postures as Susan.” (Artscene)  Bowler Hat Productions

Jazzsteps presents

Martin Drews “ Jazz Couriers”

On stage 8pm Tickets £9 cons £7

The late Scott's exciting former drummer Martin Drew and saxophonist/arranger Mornington Lockett put this tribute band together. The urbane swerves, neat turns, slickly talkative harmonies and rattling drumbeat phrasing in the Couriers' themes, and the unquenchable urge to play flat out, with the solos (mostly from Lockett, fellow sax-sprinter Nigel Hitchcock and pianist Steve Melling) are full-on. The two-sax front line emits an attractively tough-talking vitality, and it's easy to hear why this lively outfit has been such a hit around the UK circuit

A3K presents

The return of PETE SCROWTHER & PJ WRIGHT

On stage 8pm Tickets £10

PJ Wright is best known as guitarist and lead vocalist with Little Johnny England, slide and pedal steel guitarist with the Dylan Project, and long time sideman with R&B legend Steve Gibbons. Feted as a guitar virtuoso,  Wright is a talented songwriter too - compositions such as Johnny England and Forty Years On meld a poetic sensibility and an understanding of traditional song.

Pete Scrowther has released several acclaimed albums in his adopted country, Switzerland. British magazine fRoots was particularly impressed by his 1995 collection 'Scrowther', lauding the use of: "..extra colours and passages of

folk melody and rhythm" in this "very accomplished set." Their reviewer concluded: "It's invidious to single out any of Scrowther' songs since the standard is so high throughout." Pete's songs have been covered by British bands including Fairport Convention (Heart of The Song) and Little Johnny England (The Witherstone, Way Things Ought To Be, and Maybe).

Scrowther and Wright's voices complement one another beautifully and both are talented multi-instrumentalists (Wright, for example, plays dobro, harmonica, saxophone, mandolin, and organ as well as guitars of all sorts).

On stage 8pm Tickets £10 cons £8

Jamie Cullum is facing some heavy responsibilities. Aged only 22, the singer and pianist from Wiltshire is on track to become the UK's homegrown cross between Harry Connick Jr and Diana Krall.

An engaging and energetic individual, Cullum doesn't seem fazed by all the attention he is getting. He writes sharp and knowing songs that indicate a maturity beyond his boyish appearance, and he attacks some of the oldest chestnuts in the standards repertoire with a gleeful freshness. Despite his age, he can get away with delivering a tough emotional piece such as the aching You Don't Know What Love Is without sounding as if he were singing in an unfamiliar language.
