quintet plays hard-bop originals.
Damon (well known to Bonington
audiences for his work with Killer Shrimp) has toured Japan three times with
Yutaka Shinna and worked in Europe and South Korea regularly with Martin
Zenker. A special connexion has grown between the three of them over recent
years and led to the birth of this new project. All three contribute original
compositions to the programme and have a shared love of the great Hard Bop
composers and performers. The spirit and energy of the seminal recordings of
Art Blakey , Freddie Hubbard and Wayne Shorter were the inspiration for the
groups name but the music is wholly of its own

I started entering competitions; my first was a Yamaha
Local Region Competition to be held at Teville Organs
at
After winning the local event, I was asked to compete in the National competition, which was held at The Library Theatre Solihull. I played the Yamaha HS8, i won £125! which, at that age, was like winning the Lottery! I then entered the Wersi competition, winning the local event. At that time, we didn't know but the competition was going to go further. A week after winning I got a call from Aura Sounds, Purley, to ask would I compete in the Wersi European finals to be held at FRANKFURT I was playing around 30 concerts for the year as well as a full time job in my Dad's Billposting company. I was working for Dad from age 17 to 21, because I still didn't have enough concerts to do it full time. When I reached 21, with four years manual labour and trying to play concerts in the evening, my hands were starting to suffer so Dad and I had a talk and decided that I should leave his Company and try to make my living solely from music - a good move.

Paul Morgan - bass

Fine
Interpretations of the Great American Song Book.
Marlene VerPlanck returns to the
Bonington for an unmissable evening of jazz standards. She has almost
everything one could ask for in a singer of classic American songs: a gorgeous,
musically pliable sound, a solid understanding of the linkages between words
and story, a sure and steady feel for rhythm. In her early career she worked as
a backing singer for Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, and Tony Bennett, emerging as a
leading solo performer in the 1970s, playing Carnegie Hall to rave reviews. Her
previous appearances at the Bonington have been extremely well received and it
is a pleasure to have her back. John Pearce, Paul Morgan and Bobby Worth
provide superlative accompaniment.
"She may be the most
accomplished interpreter of popular material performing today...interpretive
sensitivity and perceptive choice of songs that can be matched only by a handful
of singers." The New York Times

references, amongst others, Pat Metheny, Radiohead, Miles Davis and Kurt
Rosenwinkel....His tone is varied from warm 'jazz'..to rocking with bluesy
angular lines somewhere between Scofield and Carlton
with a dash of fleet-footed Martino..... For fans of Pat Metheny, Pat Martino,
Andy Summers (with his jazz hat on)." Guitarist magazine (4 stars)
